WHY DOES MY DISHWASHER SMELL?

GET YOUR DISHWASHER SMELLING FRESH AGAIN

If you’ve ever unloaded your dishwasher and noticed a fishy or rotten-egg-like odor coming from your appliance, you’re not alone. A foul-smelling dishwasher is a common issue. The good news is, it’s often an easy fix. Let’s explore what causes a smelly dishwasher, how to get rid of any odors, and what you can do to prevent them from coming back.

WHAT CAUSES A SMELLY DISHWASHER?

A smelly dishwasher is often the result of leftover food particles that have accumulated in the filter or crevices of your appliance. Over time, these trapped particles can begin to smell. Without regular maintenance, the odor will persist. Fortunately, a little care goes a long way in helping eliminate and prevent a smelly dishwasher.

HOW TO GET RID OF A BAD DISHWASHER SMELL

1. CLEAN THE DRAIN FILTER

Your dishwasher’s drain filter plays an important role in preventing food particles from clogging the drain. Naturally, food particles can build up in the filter over time. It is often the most common culprit of a foul-smelling machine. To clean the drain filter, remove it from the dishwasher and wash it in the kitchen sink with hot, soapy water and a sponge or scrub brush. Before reinserting the filter, check that the dishwasher drain is free of debris and remove any particles.

2. CLEAN THE SPRAY ARMS

A dirty or clogged spray arm could also be the source of a smelly dishwasher. What’s more, a clogged spray arm can greatly diminish the cleaning power of your dishwasher. To clean the spray arms, remove them from the dishwasher. Check each of the spray arm’s holes for clogs and remove any particles using a cotton swab or toothpick. Soak the spray arms in the sink with equal parts water and vinegar. Rinse thoroughly to remove any remaining debris and return the spray arms to the dishwasher.

3. CLEAN THE DOOR GASKET

A door gasket is the rubber seal that lines the inside perimeter of your dishwasher door, preventing water from leaking out when you run a cycle. Sometimes food particles can stick to the gasket, or it can develop mold and mildew. Use warm, soapy water and a toothbrush to scrub away any residue. Wipe the gasket clean with a cloth.

4. RINSE THE MACHINE

Giving your dishwasher a good rinse can help neutralize odors and wash away grease and grime. Fortunately, it’s quick and easy job—no scrubbing required. Simply pour one cup of white vinegar into the bottom of your empty dishwasher, select a deep cleaning cycle, and run the dishwasher at the hottest temperature available.

REGULAR MAINTENANCE IS KEY

If you want to help prevent a smelly dishwasher from becoming a regular occurrence, a little maintenance goes a long way. Performing the above steps a few times a year can help stop food particles from building up and keep your dishwasher running smoothly. Don’t forget to thoroughly rinse your dishes and scrape off any large pieces of food before putting them in the dishwasher.
